Deputy Mayor 2017-2018
Councillor Susannah Barker-Milan
My name is Susannah Barker-Milan and I have served North Hykeham as a Town Councillor since 2011 and I am now very honoured to have been voted in as your Deputy Mayor for 2017/18 after my first successful Mayoral year in 2016/17 when I had the distinction of being the Towns' youngest female Mayor and one of only six female Mayors since the council was formed in 1894.
I was born in the town and attended the former Fen Lane Primary School and then went on to my sdecondary education at North Kesteven School. After a short spell living in Lincoln City I returned to North Hykeham where I have raised my children and enjoyed family life.
I have spent my career working within Adult Social Care and spent 20 years working at Lincolnshire County Council, actually spending my very early years as a care assistant working in the Hykeham community. After being made redundant I went on to work for the renowned Bradford Dementia Group based at Bradford University. I currently work for County Court Care (CCC) a large nursing and care home provider, my role being Head of Dementia Care. Being able to support people with dementia and their relatives is immensely rewarding for me. Neal Court, based in our town, has recently joined the CCC group.
Having both a personal and professional perspective on dementia and knowing how difficult it can be for people to live with their dementia and then in turn their friends and families, I set up a charity focused on helping North Hykeham residents who are affected by dementia called Precious Memories
There is a National Dementia Challenge and part of that is communities' becoming "Dementia Friendly", as it is important that people with dementia do not feel isolated. Therefore myself and my fellow councillors have and will continue to work towards North Hykeham becoming a Dementia Friendly Town.
